The storyline of this book is close to that of The Mitten by Jan Brett, with similar themes of kindness and cooperation, and with a some unique twists as well. The child that I read this book aloud to enjoyed figuring out why the mushroom seemed to mysteriously get larger. José Aruego's illustrations are colorful and charming--much like his pictures for Leo the Late Bloomer.
