She is married to Steve, a successful accountant, and has a grown son, David, who is about to leave for Italy to further his career. David's imminent departure acts as a time-release Capsule. The coming event slowly unleashes Margaret's memories of her own departure and stay in Italy when she was about David's age and of all the accumulated baggage of personal experiences that led to her need to leave America and return to Italy. Like two parallel lines forced to converge, the book takes us through the young Margaret's life, while also revealing her present tortuous and painful journey. towards truth. In the end, Margaret Croff feels compelled to make a crucial decision; she can no longer procrastinate. In a powerful and moving ending, we learn what that decision must ultimately be.
