I likened Uncle Tom’s Cabin to Atlas Shrugged in a twisted sort of way. Like Rand's sprawling dystopia, this story is preachy; unlike AS, whose repetition bored me increasingly with each turning page, I found UTC completely engrossing. I don't remember exactly when it happened, but at some point in this 20+ hour reading, I was consumed by the story and was up into the wee hours of the morning in a marathon session finishing the recording.

I was very surprised that the character of Uncle Tom wasn't at all what I expected from the modern usage of the term. I'm really not sure how this highly-principled character's name came to represent excessive servility.

Sounds like I should have rated it 5 stars instead of 4? Well, it was preachy, but my main reason for the downgrade is that I had access to 2 versions of the audiobook, this one and another read by Susie Berneis. I listened to the sample of this version, and simply didn't care for the narration. Susie's reading was much better for me, but it's not available at SPL.

Could be the worst book ever written. If you enjoy over-the-top preachy-ness and endless adjectives in the extreme.... this is your book. Insufferable.
