The first written of Mazo de la Roche's iconic series, this is the introduction to the southern Ontario small-town aristocratic family The Whiteoaks. Still enjoyable after nearly 90 years, Jalna embodies the best of the family saga genre. The characters are believeable and compelling, and their loves, losses, and lives are worth following. Start with this book, or start with the first in chronological order of the narrative, The Building of Jalna, but start somewhere. In the end, you will want to read them all.
