This book contains a very thorough description of Ontario's native shrubs and is an excellent reference for the serious field naturalist. Because it is organized by genus (not physical similarities) and because it contains line drawings and not photos, it is best used as a confirmatory reference for plant identification; it is a not a primary field guide. That said it does have a textual "key for shrub identification" at the front, which is a hierarchical breakdown of shrub characteristics to aid identification. Each shrub entry consists of a line drawing, a description of its physical characteristics, preferred site ecology, a map of its distribution in Ontario, a "field check" shorthand for what to look for, and any special notes.
