One of Van Vogt's many best books. It tells of the galactic and intergalactic voyages of discovery of the supership Space Beagel. It is very imaginative and Van Vogt manages to keep on creating nastier (but credible and interesting) and nastier and nastier monsters, which are no match for his Nexialist (the forerunner of Null A) hero.. This is Golden Age Sci Fi at its very best: transgalactic in scope, full of action and adventure and manages to be remarkably intelligent too. I would not be surprised if this also influenced Rodenberry's idea for the voyages of the Enterprise..
