This is a heartbreaking memoir of a girl whose mother dies when she, Cupcake, was 11 years old. Cup is then raped by the child welfare system and then her foster families. She gets mixed up in drugs, prostitution, gangs, more drugs, and finally, thank God, bottoms out behind a dumpster. The lengths to which Cup goes to convince herself that she doesn't have a "problem" are remarkable and quite funny. I alternately laughed at her thought processes and wondered that she was not dead. Of course, once she starts recovery, all is still not sweetness and light and that tale is told with great humor too.

This is absolutely the best book I have ever listened to. The reader, Bahni Turpin, shifts voice effortlessly from 11-year-old Cup to worldly-wise 13-year-old Cup to gang-banger Cup to legal secretary Cup, and on and on - it's truly a brilliant performance on Turpin's part.

I don't know how this book "reads" as I only listened to it on CD, but I can't recommend it highly enough for anyone, but especially for anyone whose life has been touched by any addict or addiction.
