Realistic historical fiction, great for girls, great for cultural education. I loved the story, the setting, the people (well, most of the people... some characters needed to fall down an empty well). I loved that reading this taught me a little about India and the Hindu religion and inspired curiosity about it. I love that the main character is a strong, intelligent female character who knows she wants an education and fights for what she feels is right.

My only complaint? Too short. I wanted more!

It's a clean read. There's a reference to marital sex in the sense that genders live apart and a married couple living separately in the same household will occasionally spend the night together in a room designated for them. That's about it. I'd say perfectly appropriate for 12 and up.
