This is one of the all-time great war movies, a POW adventure from director John Sturges that celebrates the indomitable spirit of the Allied forces even when their backs were to the wall.

Classic film! It used to come on television about once a year. It was a family favorite. Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson - if anyone is going to breakout of a Nazi prison camp - you know those guys will. Still a great film if you haven't watched it lately. I recently borrowed a DVD from SPL, also called The Great Escape. It was a PBS show about the escape and it followed some archaeologists who were excavating one of the tunnels in the film. It also interviewed a couple of guys who were imprisoned there. Gives you some inside info about their escape and how they did it. The Luftwaffe built the prison camp for downed Allied airmen and they chose the location of the site because it was on particularly sandy soil - they hoped it would deter tunneling attempts, so the details about the tunneling process was really interesting! Be sure to check out both for great viewing.

This classic will have you at the edge of your seat.
Without giving too much away, this film is based on a true story about prisoners of war during WWII trying to escape captivity. The ingenuity and ability of prisoners to work toward a common goal despite their language and nationality differences makes this film empowering.
This movie is long but moves quickly enough that you will never be bored. Get the popcorn ready and prepare yourself for laughs, gasps and sometimes, a few tears.

I was pleased how this followed the true story of The Longest Tunnel which I read first.

Probably the best WW2 POW story ever put to film. All-Star cast, great production value, and incredible on-location scenes combine to make this a must-watch film.

Even though Steve McQueen is in this, he doesn't make the film. The story itself is the star of this movie & the story is a truly moving adventure about mostly British POW's that plan the most epic of escapes. I hate to spoil anything but I was saddened by the fact that more men didn't make it. No matter! The point is they tried & did in fact meet their goal: to mess seriously with the world domination hungry Germans. A lovely gem of a film that is refreshingly emotionally honest.
