my most favorite book in grade school (and the subject of my first-ever book report) - i had re-read it every year. just read it now and it still holds up: the characters are true to life, the situations and dialogue are completely believable and natural-sounding, and the story is well-paced and enjoyable to read. i wish i had discovered more contemporary kids books of this quality back then.
