A Great read for a Staycation!! or if planning a vacation. The book is laid out by area and can provide historic destination ideas.

While recovering from surgery this provided an AWESOME viewing / reading / diversion for me. I recommend reading this with an atlas nearby as it covers the entire world!

1001 Historic Sites You Must See Before You Die --- by Becky Gee at al. The dimensions of this book, produced in co-opreration with UNESCO are a little intimidating: its about the size of two bricks. But then, remember, it does include a lot of very nice photographs. This book is particularly useful to someone planning a trip without any particular destination in mind: pick the most appealing picture and away you go. On the otehr hand, it could be a kind of clip-board to help you collect world sites --- a sort of global monopoly game.Or it might just be a nice little souvenir of place you have been or, again, a source of inspiration to the arm chair traveller. Arranged by continents and further subdivided by countries, this work is heavily focused on Europe. Not all the entrie are strictly of equal historicalimportance: (Monte Alban, Mexico; Lord's C ricket Grounds, London; Cairo Citadel, Egypt), some areas are grossly under fepresented (China of --- second largest country in the world, oldest civilization --- less than 20 pages. Does that just reflect the difficulty of travel in China). Some of the history is recent as the Second World War; some is posetively ancient: Dragon Bone Hill, China: site of the discovery of Homo Erectus.
