If you want to understand the writings of James Joyce, you absolutely MUST read this book first. Ellmann's biography of Joyce is definitely the best one out there, and the only one to read. Once you've read Ellmann, I recommend that you immediately read each of Joyce's books, in order of publication--they will FINALLY make sense to you. Doing this made for one of the best reading experiences of my life. Enjoy!
