A gripping story with both fast-paced action and meaning, this was a great read. This book is a nice mix of political allegory, romance, fantasy, and danger. My only complaint is how weak the ending was. It seemed like it just suddenly dropped into a stereotypical "happily ever after". I have not read the next books yet and I hope they will be even better!

I like Maurice Gee's writing, and this was an engaging YA novel. Not sure I'm going to go on to read the second and third in the trilogy, and that's okay - this one makes a nice stand-alone. Futuristic, slightly on the fantasy side, very well done.

Excellent allegorical novel. Socio-political commentary was clear and intriguing. Characters and world were interesting. Plot left a little to be desired, but not so much as to detract from the story.

New Zealand author. A promising and interesting story had a rushed and predictable end.

Pretty good overall but I'm not a fan of this book. Ending was a little hurried.
