What happened in the Middle East's oil-rich powerhouse while we weren't looking

Following on his 1982 classic The Kingdom , British journalist and bestselling author Robert Lacey offers penetrating insights into the complex country of Saudi Arabia. Taking the reader from the dramatic seizure of the Grand Mosque in Jeddah in 1979 to the deepening U.S.-Saudi relations during the Persian Gulf War to the increasing alienation of such radical fundamentalists as Osama Bin Laden, Lacey presents an unvarnished picture of a country where repression is endemic and religion rules all. Through conversations with a broad range of Saudis, from high princes and ambassadors to men and women on the street, Inside the Kingdom is a story of a people trying to reconcile the religious separatism of the past with the rapidly changing world in which they are increasingly intertwined.

Somewhat dated and understandably a rather rose-coloured view of Saudi Arabia because of the author's Saudi connections and contacts in the country and amongst the Saudi elite.

Super Book that gives that an outstanding insight to the conservative Saudia Arabia, and its complex links to the Islamic and western worlds. Very easy to read, well constructed and extremely interesting

This is a fascinating discovery of the middle east, with characters of shiekh's, radicals, religious fanatics and others. A good background of this country put together only a short few decades ago.
