SUDDENLY is one of those films that doesn't reach its potential. As far as thrillers go, it's competent enough, if directed and shot with little cinematic imagination. A lot of the supporting performances range from competent to outright bad. There are lines which must have been corny even to 1950s filmgoers.

The one reason to watch this is Frank Sinatra. He is such a great bad guy in this, a psychopathic killer only interested in two things, money and destruction. He doesn't care about ideology or values; he's only out for blood and himself. He's great to watch, charismatic and threatening, and he deserved a much better movie than this one. The other characters are so flat and stereotypical, so annoying even (I couldn't decide who was worse: the whiny kid or his perpetually fainting mother), that Sinatra's villain is even more captivating by comparison.

A decent movie with one great performance in it. Worth one watch if the premise intrigues you or you like Sinatra.

Janice: or maybe its just a pretty good thriller. BTW: that annoying kid (and he is fucking annoying) burns his draft card and becomes a Weatherman. There. Is that more satisfying?

Worth watching, mostly for its spooky, mixed-up cold war politics. It makes tough-guy noises about treason and Supporting Our Troops, but hints something, somewhere, is not quite right.

But it can be made right, if men patronize women, we look after children in foundling homes, and all ages have free access to firearms. Or can it?
Meanwhile, all ends well. Our heroine asks, nay, begs her hunky suitor to take her to church, and her annoying son at least lives long enough to die in Vietnam.
