The aliens appeared one day, built a base on the moon, and put an ad on the internet:

"We are an alien race you may call the Atoners. Ten thousand years ago we wronged humanity profoundly. We cannot undo what has been done, but we wish humanity to understand it. Therefore we request twenty-one volunteers to visit seven planets to Witness for us. We will convey each volunteer there and back in complete safety. Volunteers must speak English. Send requests for electronic applications to"

At first, everyone thought it was a joke. But it wasn't.

This is the story of three of those volunteers, and what they found on Kular A and Kular B.

Very entertaining novel of first contact. The ending wasn't as strong as I'd have hoped, but overall it was still a great read.

Pretty good, typical of her other work, strong, interesting characters living a well-developed, complex plot.

this was an interesting but limited book. Alot of unanswered questions at the end and a feeling tat someone had systematically gone through the book and riipped outg interesting and important parts just to comfound me. And they did it in a way that made me believe this was the whole novel.
The book was good. But the disappointment comes from knowing that there was an amazing , killer, make you rip your own face off then sew it back on in excitement type of book ( ok that one went to far, but I'm no author). But in all seriousness so much was left without even a subtle hint let alone completion of things it leads me to believe she overdid the due date, they edited out alot of the end of the book and didn't have time to rework what was left.
really too bad

Excellent premise. Too bad the author did not use it to its fullest potential. Read this in the Elliott Bay Speculations book club.

Some very interesting themes, however it was crude (swearing - sexual innuendo) and savage at times (mass murder). Progressed well and kept my interest but had an ending that was dissatisfying, to say the least. It could have been so much more, but work a few hours of one's life - I guess
