From the author of Alice, I Think comes a riveting memoir of addiction and recovery. Susan Juby started out as a bright and creative student with an innate ability to write incredible stories. At the age of thirteen her life began to unravel, and like many teens, she turned to alcohol to get her through the awkward stages of trying to find her own unique identity and fit in with her peers at school. In this revealing memoir, she details the painful and sometimes funny experiences of trying to be clean and sober at a time when most young adults are just starting their drinking careers. Juby also looks into how the situation has changed for young people washing up on the shores of addiction today through a series of interviews with recovering addicts and alcoholics. Told with honesty and Juby's wry wit, Nice Recovery is a candid memoir from one of Canada's most beloved writers.

Susan Juby is the Canadian author of Alice I think - a book about 15 year-old Alice who keeps a diary as she struggles to cope with dating, school, work, small town life, and a serious case of "outcastitis." In Nice Recovery, she has written a memoir detailing her own extreme sense of being a social outcast. She describes events – both comic and horrific and the array of feelings from exhilaration to despair that accompanied her rapid descent into alcoholism - beginning at the tender age of 13 – and ending with her journey toward recovery at the ripe old age of 20. The author credits the 12 steps program for saving her life and also recounts interviews with other teens who struggle with addiction. The author’s obvious intention is to reach out and provide hope for young people who have prematurely succumbed to alcoholism and to let them know that they are not alone. A good read for anyone not just Young Adult.

I really didn't like the book becuase there was too much talking about things that I didn't find comfortable for me.

A must read for any teen girl who is suffering with low self-esteem and is looking to alcohol and/or drugs to boost their confidence.

Susan Juby's autobiographical look at teen addiction and recovery is honest and inspiring. The first and second parts of the book read like a novel and, eventhough set in the 1980's and 1990's, are relevant to today's struggling teens. The last section of the book is more clinical. This section deals more with other people with whom Susan has had contact, has interviewed, or has helped through recovery.

I found this novel very interesting. It was hard to put down. This memoir was not at all dry . It felt like a fiction novel. It is hard to believe that some of Susan Juby's experiences are real. It is really schocking. I definitly recommend reading this book.

Didn't like the book too much because it was hard to relate. A whole book describing someone's life struggling to quit alcohol can get a little boring.

A wonderful book that was just like having a conversation about recovery. Written in 3 parts the author writes about her addiction, recovery, and models for recover interspersed with other young people's stories of recovery. Candid and witty, a great memoir from Susan Juby that addresses youth in recovery. Wonderful.
