Terribly formulaic, predictable dialogue. I cringed through the whole thing. If you take away the dialogue, it is a beautiful film.

After the success of "Young Guns," studios were quick to roll out other similar movies, including "Mobsters," (aka "Young Hoods"), "Young Guns 2," and a new version of "The Three Musketeers," which could've easily been called "Young Musketeers." It's silly, but fun and spirited, with a generally good cast, although casting all American actors as the leads is a bit distracting. The villains fare better: Tim Curry, relishing his evilness as Cardinal Richelieu, guttural voiced Michael Wincott, essentially playing the same role he did in "Robin Hood," and Rebecca De Mornay, who is pretty, but a little empty as Milady. The swordplay is spirited, but this does compare unfavorably with the 70s version, which had a better cast (Oliver Reed, Charlton Heston, Faye Dunaway, Christopher Lee), a wittier script and more verve. Featuring the hit song "All for Money" by Sting, Rod Stewart and Bryan Adams.

Fun, though not particularly faithful to the original novel. Sutherland, Platt, and O'Donnell are fine in their roles. Charlie Sheen, as usual, is playing Charlie Sheen, and that gets really tedious really fast, but fortunately he's outnumbered by better actors.

It does cover the whole wide screen on my set-up. Also, the sound is very enjoyable (I have surround sound). Now, don't fuss about the original novel. It is not about that here. Enjoy it as a really fun movie.

Unfortunately, this release is in letterbox format, i.e. will display a very small picture on a widescreen TV. Or you can expand it to cover the whole screen if your TV allows that, but then the picture will be low resolution (much less than standard). Never mind that it says "widescreen 2.35:1 -- it is not.
