This book is like being enveloped in an encyclopedia of rail, from early innovations through modern times. Page after page of images, posters, drawings and yes... maps! LOTS of maps. Highly recommend this comprehensive work.

Historical Atlas of the North American Railroad --- by --- Derek Hayes.
A compilation of maps produced by the many different railroads over the span of time from their initial construction to current times, this book is much more than just a collection of maps. Rather it also includes a wealth of other information: illustrations, statistics and text that links and explains the maps and photographs. It goes into the intricacies of steam engines; land grants; technological change and more.
Of course you don’t read an atlas from cover to cover. Well, perhaps the text. But you study the maps: you extract from them what you will and then you move on. Slowly. This is a book that’ll keep you busy for quite a while. Engrossing.

An attractive 'coffee table' book that offers a brief, well illustrated (usually with a route map) item about each of the railroads of North America from the first days of steam through to contemporary plans for high-speed passenger rail. The book concludes with a list for Further Reading.
