This is a fascinating novel that transports the reader from pre-WWll Engand to Italy. Bella's Widower father has arranged for her to become a governess in Italy after he decides he won't be able to get on with the business of dating with his clingy daughter around. She is initially shocked and resistant but she grows to love Italy, her young student and the many characters that now populate her life. But war is coming. At first there are a few posters that make her uneasy but the tension and the reality of war builds until Bella is forced to make some very dangerous decisions. There is also a parallel narrative in 1990 Dublin. Good book.
