In 1881, 25 men led by Lieutenant Adolphus Greely sailed from the harbor of St. John's, Newfoundland. Their destination was Lady Franklin Bay in the high Arctic, where they planned to collect a wealth of scientific data from a vast area of the world's surface that had been described by a British admiral as a 'sheer blank.' Three years later, only six survivors returned, with a daunting story of shipwreck, starvation, mutiny, and cannibalism.

Believe it or not support of this production is not wisdom. This is an American expedition in our arctic territory. And at the present time we are attempting to establish Canadian sovereignty in these areas. If the americans can show that there has been sufficient international exploration then there is a distinct possibility that we could lose control of this area. NOT THE LAND, but the waters that run inbetween all of these islands in the north. These straits could be deem 'international waters' and there is much that we could lose by that definition.
American nuclear subs have made attempts at using these waters without permission. It is a sensitive issue. Forget the Russians, it is not them you need to worry about.

Exceptional documentary about an American expedition to the polar regions in the 19th Century. It's a story I was unfamiliar with, but it's a harrowing tale that goes into both the good and the bad side of what happened, and features some stunning cinematography and insights into the times. Highly recommended.
