Fleeing the turmoil, Wang Yuan, the son of a famous general and grandson of the patriarch of The Good Earth , leaves for America to study agriculture. When he returns to China six years later, he encounters a nation still in the grip of violent uprisings. Unprepared for the social upheaval, Wang is torn by the tensions between old traditions and new ways, and by his formidable family, whose struggles he hopes to solve. A reflective finale to Buck's groundbreaking and bestselling trilogy, A House Divided is a rich and unforgettable portrait of a family--and a nation--in transition. This is part three of The Good Earth, and is another well-written book about China and its people and customs and especially the effect that the twentieth century had on them. We experience their world through the eyes of Wang Yuan, son of Wang the Tiger of the second book. This book could be read without having read the first two novels, since it fills in relationships from the past. One can learn a lot about China, especially as it teeters on the edge of great social change. There could be places where the specific names of cities and more exact dates could be given, but that does not detract from the story.

I tried reading Pearl Buck in High School and found it uninteresting. Now after having gone to China and also getting older, I find Pearl Buck's works fascinating as historical fiction. I fully enjoyed her Trilogy that began with The Good Earth. Plan to read more.
