On first reading this cookbook I was ready to give a very high rating. The author is a delightful writer, funny and charming. The way she described the recipes were mouth-watering. BUT I then made two of the recipes and they were "meh", very ordinary indeed. I went back and reread the recipes and saw that she relies on lots of butter, salt, and sugar especially in baked goods. Well, in all truth, stick enough butter and sugar in a cookie, plus chocolate, and people will eat it, whether or not it is actually a good cookie. Taking a second look, for me, most of the recipes were very basic indeed with a really good, excited introduction building them up. Another comment recommended this book for "cookbook readers". I totally agree, a delightful read but don't bother making the recipes.
Smorgasbook thought this book was approachable and funny. Deb had a charming approach that was filled with great tips, interesting recipes that turned out great. However, we were tripped up by the layout in which recipes were laid out over multiple pages and had some inconsistences. We highly recommend this cookbook to the cook book reader. You will love Deb and her gorgeous food. For the cook, give this one a try but be ready to copy down her recipes on to card for future reference.
FANTASTIC!
Great cookbook! We liked it so much that we purchased our own copy and use it frequently.
I love this book because it gave me permission to openly eat iceberg lettuce again, so unfashionable for so long but now ubiquitous on hipster menus everywhere. Everything tastes good slathered in blue cheese dressing though. The broccoli slaw is the best.
A very entertaining read, with tasty recipes and gorgeous pictures. Perelman's advice about the tools to properly outfit a kitchen on a budget is very helpful.
I learned to splat-cock a chicken from this book! . Perelman gives terrific advice. Who knew it was best to skip the big fat chickens and buy the small ones instead. The apple cake is yummy too.
We've added several recipes from this lovely book to our menu rotation at home - the Sesame-Spiced Turkey Meatballs and Smashed Chickpea Salad are particularly delicious, as are the Apple Cider Caramels.
Really enjoy this cookbook and the recipes are really accessible. Great photography too. Love it when cookbooks have it...makes all the difference! Recommend!
