This is a series that has been going from strength to strength. Fever Devilin is a folklorist with a comprehensive knowledge of other cultures and no inkling of his own past. So when he quits the academy and settles down in Blue Mountain, Georgia, his home town, he starts to uncover an unusually rich and repressed family history. No surprise if a few people out to do him harm turn up along the way.

The setting is richly imagined, the characters are each given their own depths, and DePoy never tries to make his hero more sympathetic than he deserves. This volume in the series offers a particularly deep look at the way that those who value their independence often in fact do no more than repeat patterns thousands of years old. The focus is narrow here, on five characters, and I could have done with more of the rural Merlins and Taliesins he has shown in other volumes, but that's what the next one's for, right?
