Brings to vivid life a household of Scottish orphans trying to make their way in Toronto in 1879. The youngest, Clare, has rheumatic fever; the oldest brother has run away. The fate of them all rests on the responsible Ben, the irrepressible Charlie and the two middle sisters: Kez, sarcastic with big ears and a kind heart, and Nan, benignly round but with a hidden talent for larceny and mischief. Fascinating lives spool out from these siblings: a cast of indelible strivers and schemers, spinsters and unhappy spouses, star-crossed lovers and hidden adulterers, victims of war and of suicide--proof of how eventful the lives of "ordinary families" can be.

All the stars.... this book follows members of an extended through a period of time where some are alive and young, and who become in their turn older and with children of their own, and then the lives of those children as they mature into adults and have children of their own. It's about the passage of time, the importance of memory, the things we pass on from ourselves that survive our lives and follow into others' lives. I loved this book.

While I enjoyed some of the descriptions and some of the mini-stories, I found this novel confusing to follow. It was hard to tell what time a section covered, where the stories took place, and how they interconnected. The same names appeared again and again, although I think they were different people, probably relatives of some of the people of the same name who appeared earlier in the book. Although perhaps the story just came back in loops to those names. It was impossible for me to tell and for me to find any threads and follow them through. This award-winning story doesn't win any awards from me.
