A good change from police work to post-war intelligence. Interesting intrigues within political organizations.

Producer/writer changes gears from World war II to early Cold war from Russian style musical opening. Foyle a loose cannon only that he still have his morals to friends, intelligence co-workers & enemies.

Wow! A TV series we totally enjoyed.
The stories, complicated and unpredictable, were all interwoven, and in the end - but not until the end - always all wrapped up and the case(s) solved - usually in the way you least expected it, but making total sense. The actor playing Detective Foyle does an amazing job. Very often he didn't say a word, but we could tell what he was thinking just from his expressions. Other times he delivered gut-punching lines ("I've figured out what you did and how you did it") with a perfectly straight face.
For us it was eye-opening, learning about WWII from the English point of view. There were many thought-provoking topics as various characters consider what would be the best course of action, and experience character-building events in their lives. I love learning something while being entertained.
Other reviews mentioned lack of captions; we watch everything with captions (although the actors in this series speak clearly enough for us to understand them better than most with an accent different from our own), and I believe there are now captions on all discs in every season of this series.

Excellent British historical series. Second or (third?) time watching some episodes.

We love Michael Kitchen's Foyle in our house, but I gave this one a 4 instead of a 5 because it is dark, pessimistic, and Foyle seems worn out compared to the brilliance and lightness of his war years. Perhaps this is because he is caught in the machinations and duplicities of the London bureaucracy, where his creativity is tightly channelled, as compared to the freedom and independence he had in Hastings. Anyway, still enjoyable but don't expect the same light and airiness as the wartime years.

This successful BBC detective series was set in Sussex during WWII and now seems set in London as Foyle moves on to work with MI5. The UK has been exhausted by the five years of war and as the commentary points out, many people at the time were asking if Britain really won the war if their present condition was anything to go by. There is only a limited continuity between what should be considered the beginning of a new series, Foyle's (Cold) War and the previous series, Foyle's (WWII) War. The series continues it's highly accurate portrait of the era life and times in it's attention to details. If you enjoyed the previous series you will enjoy this one as well.

i didn't like the 1st 2 episodes at all. violent, creepy, communist. the 3rd one was better. also honeysuckle looked pale, thin and terrible with her horrible wartime hairdo. she didn't really have a clear place in this series.

Anthony Horowitz is a genius. I so loved the Foyle's War series and was disappointed it ended, but then WWII cannot go on forever. But Mr Horowitz created a new era in which Christopher Foyle could ply his forensic skills. At the end of the first episode "The Eternity Ring", the cold war, MI5. and Foyle's involvement are nicely spelled out for the viewer.
