Sometimes it's crappy pop movies that seem to capture the zeitgeist, and "The Purge" trilogy (Look for the 4th next year!) has somehow done so. "Black-ish" even had an episode inspired by it. It's a semi-decent premise, which perhaps goes back to Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." The premise, as many have noted, is undone by the writing, which has numerous plot holes. Like why would a home security expert (Ethan Hawke) not have a backup generator or a panic room? It has some tense moments, but much of the action is muddled because it's dark. Lena Headey ("Game of Thrones") co-stars. The best part was when they purged.

This is not a very good movie A stupid plot and what was more stupid I did not turn it off when I first thought of it.

The purge was probably one of the scariest and most shocking movies I've seen in my entire life. I'm not a very big fan of horror movies but after I watched this movie I became a little more interested in watching thrillers, like this. I watched this movie with my friend and I was very scared the entire time. This movie put you on your toes and you never know what is going to happen next as you watch it. If you really like horror movies I suggest you watch The Purge immediately. Since I was not a huge fan of horror movies to begin with I probably didn't appreciate it as much as those who did. Some parts were a little too gory and disgusting for my liking, but I continued to watch anyway. Overall, this movie was filled with exciting, thrilling, and very very scary scenes that shouldn't be watched by small children or even adults that do not like or enjoy movies like this! If you cannot bear horror movies in any way, shape, or form, I suggest you don't watch The Purge. I would rate this movie a 3/5.

I’m glad I watched the 3rd part of this trilogy first. The 1st part then made more sense and I look forward to watching the 2nd part. The general idea was that “Purge Night” encouraged the right/white/male citizens to declare war on those they deemed inferior by nature of gender, race, religion, etc. while encouraging the poor to wipe each other out. I encourge you to watch Purge - Election Night. In a year when Donald Trump wins the presidency partially thanks to a campaign that has played to the very worst instincts of people who otherwise might consider themselves good and decent; The Purge: Election Year ends up being in effect, a warning call.

that movie is a little more mature than The Purge: Anarchy - but still from the beginning you may guess what would happen after, even sometimes the plot is irrational

if you think about - how come that 4 people have so big difficulties to find themselves in even very big house - like it could be a castle
from psychological point of view - it is absolutely wrong expect that people wil supress their emotions waiting for one day to be driven by instincts - because to develop really sick brain - it take about 10 years - and it is not like release dogs out of the leash. Even you hide your emotions - has nothing to do with desire to be mad

Watchable but idiotic in story and events.

I thought the movie would be different. The idea is original. Ethan Hawke did good in this movie, (he did all the work). The rest of his family was not likeable and his wife's cheap Halloween wig was distracting. The movie did have some action but the whole plot and dialogue could have been better.

Wow, this movie goes beautifully with the population decimation plans for agenda 21.

Well. A different outtake on the home invasion genre. The thing is, I have no difficulty seeing The Purge's set-up as something ever-so-American: I could see something like this happening in the U.S. (or anywhere, really).
Interesting to watch the special features on the DVD. The copy I had had a very nice/thought-provoking making of featurette.

Heard a lot about the central message of this movie which succeeded to focus on the message even though more like another horrific home invasion film.

Announcer TOMMY: Thanks, Nicole. Now, is the Purge really about releasing aggression and containing violence, or is it something else? Purge detractors often postulate this evening is actually about the elimination of the poor, the needy, the sick. Those unable to defend themselves. The eradication of the so called "non-contributing members" of society, ultimately unburdening the economy. Is the Purge really about money? Either way, crime is down. The economy is flourishing…

Announcer: This is not a test. This is your Emergency Broadcast System announcing the commencement of the Annual Purge sanctioned by the U. S. Government. Weapons of Class Four and lower have been authorized for use during the Purge. All other weapons are restricted. Government officials of ranking 10 have been granted immunity from the Purge and shall not be harmed. Commencing at the siren, any and all crime, including murder, will be legal for 12 continuous hours. Police, fire and emergency medical services will be unavailable ...
