There are some good visual ideas in The Conjuring but ultimately the film suffers from an over reliance other movie horror tropes. The homages to Poltergeist are probably the strongest but The Exorcist and Blair Witch Project appear to have had a strong influence as well. The film's haunted music box is designed in the cartoonish manner of a Tim Burton prop. Stylistically it seems from another movie. Was it so hard to hit ebay up for a genuine antique for a prop that is on screen as much? To add the film shows a poor understanding of what ordinary people were like in the 70's. People were not nearly so fit for one thing! Another is that it was an era of high disfunction. Even the mellow hippies were kind of shell shocked through the decade. These demonologists are just a little bit too hip (and beautiful) for the era. When the photos of the 'actual' families are shown at the end (a spooky touch which adds authenticity the film could have used sooner) you can see that these were definitely not 'movie people'. Better casting could have helped the film's credibility. Evidently a number of sequels were produced with these same two protagonists so I guess that kills the learning curve theory. As I mentioned there are some occasional creepy images and it does attempt to create atmosphere but it all feels like spare parts as opposed to a coherent story.

Entertaining old-school horror. While I wasn't ever terrified, it does have good moments of tension and creepy atmosphere.

Definitely not for the weak heart! For best effect, watch it in a raining stormy night, alone in the dark. For most fun, watch it in the dark with a few friends who are easily spooked by but like ghost stories. It's better than Halloween :)

The Conjuring
Good cast. At least the creepy music and creaky floorboards added up to some scary visions. Haunted houses, dead silences, things that go thud in the night and creepy basements, always in the dark, is a pretty formulaic scary movie, but a little better done. I’ll sleep just fine at night though.

Not to many jump scares and a slow start. It's not the best James Wan movie ever but it will still keep you at the edge of your seat.

Loads of scary fun. If you like Poltergeist or The Exorcist, you'll enjoy The Conjuring.

Did not know this was based on a true story. I will forever have nightmares because of this movie.

At first I thought this was just going to be another horror movie but when I saw that it’s based on a true story, I actually got chills and goosebumps all over my body. This movie has some really scary images, sound effects and voices. I would not recommend watching this movie alone. The plot was amazing and the story line was pretty good. I really liked how the family is getting used to the new house and things happen, and then they call Ed and Lorraine Warren to investigate. It was just so intense. There definitely were some good jump scares, in terms of images, sound and even voice. I know I got scared really badly.
So if you dare to watch this movie alone, beware, you are in for a scare.

Before watching this movie I had heard it was incredibly terrifying. While I think it was a decent scare and thrill, it was certainly not worthy of that much hype. A couple moves into a house on Rhode Island. Like other paranormal movies, things are quite normal in the beginning. However, as time passes, the oddities do not go unnoticed. The couple realizes that something is definitely wrong and they invite a pair of investigators, Lorraine and Ed, to help them. The pair confirms that their house is in fact housing an evil entity. Will Ed and Lorraine be able to eradicate the presence of evil from the house or will evil prevail?

Terribly overwrought, overblown ghostly claptrap. It uses every ghost movie cliche and badly. Less is always more in a good horror film. It's a terrible movie compared to "The Changeling," "The Innocents," or "Haunted."
