Filmed over three years with unprecedented access, this documentary follows David Hockney as he returns to England after 25 years in Hollywood. As Hockney approaches the age of 70, he revitalizes his painting, capturing the beautiful Yorkshire countryside in all weathers and seasons, and finally creates the largest picture ever made outdoors. Premiered on BBC1, the film tells the story of an unusual homecoming and also an intimate portrait of what inspires Hockney as his time runs out.

Add a CommentFabulous! It is wonderful to learn of the artist and see him at work and hear his own words. If one cannot meet him personally this is a very close second. Such a gifted man.
If you enjoy Hockney and want to learn more from his own words, this is a great opportunity. I thought the filmmaker got in the way a few times (ie. framing shots to include himself, at the expense of his subject) but Hockney is a delight to listen to and watch.
Excellent portrait of the British painter David Hockney- it's especially interesting if you're a painter.
"You don't retire doing this. You just do it till you fall over." -- David Hockney
Bruno Wllheim spent three years filming the artist in order to give us this wonderful cinematic window into the creative life of a 70 year old master painter,.. at the height of his productivity !!
The bonus extras are also extraordinary.
I hope that Willheim makes more documentaries,.. giving insight into creative treasures such as David Hockney.
