Mary McGann's marriage has always been a difficult one, thanks to her husband Frank's drunken, jealous behaviour. When Frank throws Mary and her children out on the street, she flees to her family in Dublin. One of the few people to help her is Richard O'Neill, a handsome though solitary man, but Mary's not looking for a romantic diversion. When Frank sends word that he needs her she returns to Liverpool, where there are surprises in store. Though tragedy and danger loom, a brighter horizon lies beyond, if Mary is prepared to take the chances that come her way.
