It is a good example of portraying someone that evolves from many years of working within the law, then resorting to violence to make a point, to realizing that peace was the only way to heal the country's racial wars, over more violence, and vengeance.
The film follows Nelson Mandela from around 1943, while working as a lawyer in Johannesburg, just before joining the African National Congress (ANC) party, through his 27 years in prison, release in 1990, up until his presidency in 1994.
Mandela brought in a coalition government which emphasised reconciliation and created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past abuses.
Nelson Mandela 1918 - 2013; President of South Africa May 10 1994 - June 14, 1999.

Good movie that traces Mandela's self-absorption and persistence in becoming a high-status, studly lawyer, into a true leader who not only persists but also sacrifices much to bring his nation forward. 27 years of arrest! The prison scenes and how Mandela connects with his jailers is very well-done, as are the effects on his wife, Winnie, who is also imprisoned and abused, and their family. The role of violence, often automatically shied away from as being bad, is realistically portrayed as a tool by both sides.

It was a good movie to iniate oneself into all that Mandela went through. A note: Near the beginning, he hits his first wife. I kept thinking...men strive to be free meanwhile some keep their wives "down". However, that is just a side point...and should not overshadow the greatness of what this man accomplished....and his second wife was certainly a hero also.

Pure quintessential hollywood crap. Nelson Mandela's legacy deserves so much better than this unfathomably depraved capitalist propaganda. Read the book!

The movie is truthful and transparently shows Mandela's personality . it shows at one scene that he cheated on his wife and it shows in another scene his mighty power overcoming 27 years in prison to become a president. So you want to learn from him as an icon of personal power. The actor , Idris Elba, has succeeded in his role and literally lived in one of the cell in Robben Island. I recommend this movie

Although the movie was over two hours long, the content felt compressed. I also felt that Idris Elba was not right for the role. The story of Nelson Mandela and the struggle against apartheid in South Africa is a great one, and I felt it could have been done better.

This is nothing more than more MK ULTRA BRAINWASHING for black people worldwide to continue to be the COWARDS that are in real life right now and have always been since the historical slavery days all the way to these modern day slavery days in 2014 and beyond for black people only period.Shame on you too Naomie Harris for bleaching your skin like Erica Hubbard did period.Better than the ''Winnie Mandela'' hack of a movie by DEFAULT only,Idris Alba's good acting skills on display here cannot save this movie that is really hiding the real TRUTH about his real actual life from his childhood all the way to his death in real life. This is always the case and will always be the case as long as HOLLYWOOD,not honorable black people, are the makers of black films about black people period,BUT I DIGRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
