When she learns that her Aunt Vicky has been diagnosed with breast cancer, she races to her aunt's side. She finds her aunt is dealing with the sudden death of a friend; Emelia, an undocumented worker. Her death looks unnatural to Judy, so she investigates, which leads her into an underground world far more dangerous than she ever imagined.

I'm reading this series out of order since I started with books 5 and 6 and am just catching up with the earlier books. This one, by far, is my least favorite. The story focuses on Judy Carrier who's an associate at Rosato & DiNunzio. Judy's having a hard time because her best friend is getting married, her Aunt Barb is having breast cancer surgery, her boyfriend is getting on her last nerve, and her work assignments violate her moral compass. As her worlds collide when her Aunt Barb's friend Iris is found dead of apparent heart attack, Judy finds herself in the middle of a mystery and a Mexican drug cartel. My problem with the book is Judy herself as her emotions run amok and she becomes almost a caricature of the angry moralist, the forgotten daughter, and a wallower in self-pity. Her shrill responses to the people around also grated on my nerves at time.

I enjoyed revisiting these characters, but did feel Judy was a little over the top in her reactions to the family secret. All's well that ends well, and I look forward to seeing ehat happens with the new member of Bennie Rosato's all female law firm!

Another fine mystery by Lisa. Good characters, good story line and keeps your attention. 7 of 10 for me.

I was really looking forward to listening to the audiobook. Rosato & Associates were my favourite characters. However, after listening to this I have learned that Judy's backstory is the most BORING of all the characters. What made it worse is that the reader, actress Maria Bello emphasized
the most random words and enunciated things so crisply that everyone sounded annoyed ALL. THE. TIME. I will never listen to anything Bello narrates. Ever. I got so irritated with Bello and the weak storyline, I constantly "fast forwarded". I did finish the whole thing only because I am/was a fan. (Maybe the book -without having to listen to Bello- is better ?) Very disappointed.
