This is directed at "yo918" Name another recording artist who has been more honored for his contribution to the arts. Name one who has won a Nobel Prize. Yes it is your opinion and you are of course entitled to it, but honors publicly bestowed by reputable and esteemed organizations speak for themselves; while you of course speak for yourself.
Amazed by the comments here. NOT that everyone hated this garbage album, but that they just seem so...surprised by it. C'mon people. Bob Dylan is just another in a long line of seriously over-hyped and over-rated "geniuses". Why that is, well, I'll let you determine that for yourselves. But I suspect it has something to do with, oh, the fact that the New York media mavens and cultural elitist types all do seem to love their own homeboys. Dylan has never been worthy of the heaps of praise he has garnered since day one. That's my opinion, yes, but I have also made it a hobby to actually ASK hundreds, maybe thousands, of people during my life, simple questions about some of these supposed "geniuses" that I myself always disliked intensely. One of those questions was "Do you like Bob Dylan's music"? And guess what? No matter the age group or music preferences, maybe FIVE people in all that time said they did like him. Of course we all know the critics would never go by something as mundane as whether people LIKED something, but I personally could care less what critics say about anything at all. The fact that such a huge percentage of people answered that simple question with a resounding NO says something to me anyhow. That, yes, there IS a bit of a "conspiracy" where arts and entertainment is concerned, and it's always been far more about who you know than anything to do with talent.
Let us give Bob a chance to experiment. While this album is not my favorite - I would like to give him a B for trying
With 'Bob' it's either a home run,or a miss by a mile, this one's the latter. He could be given a medal for bravery for even trying to sing this material, but he also should be court marshaled for doing it. This is a dreadful release, and rumour has it he could be doing another one,I sure hope not.
As a Bob fan, I am surprised and quite disappointed at this effort. Very glad I borrowed it before I (didnt) buy it. Dylan should not attempt this type of music. Dylan is a great songwriter and his voice works on his own songs, not these.
I am a Bob Dylan fan, but this one did not move me, no matter what some critics might have said. . It just sounds like he walked into the studio with a bottle of Jack Daniels and told his band, "let's do some Sinatra."
Killer record, one of the year's best and the finest Dylan offering in a while-lovin' it!
Here's the thing about this yet-another-left-turn-in-a-long-career-of-left-turns album: Dylan is in great form, at least in terms of voice and band. His voice has not sounded this good since the early 90s. There's nary a growl or sandblasted-beyond-recognition moment -- which is pretty significant. On the other hand, the songs are a complete snoozefest. I may come to appreciate this album more when I'm 75.
So sad. Come on, this is the emperor's new clothes! It's ONLY because he is Dylan, that this recording was produced. He mangles the songs. My goodness, it's sad that there are so many REAL singers out there who are unknown and will never get the chance to make a recording but just because Dylan decides he wants to sing standards, doesn't mean he can or should! He sounds just like an old guy. Can not reach notes. Off key, voice cracks. Waste of time and money. Don't bother.
