For more than four decades, Canadian nationalist, publisher and best-selling author, Mel Hurtig, has been warning Canadians about the negative influences of the excessive corporate takeover of Canada, including the impacts of foreign ownership and so-called free-trade agreements. In this short but important book, Mel Hurtig turns his attention to the devastating impact that the Stephen Harper government has had on Canada, radically altering the democratic, social and economic fabric of the country. He shows how Stephen Harper's single-minded pursuit of big oil and the tar sands, at a time when the world must take dramatic action to arrest climate change, has inflicted enormous damage on our country and on our international reputation. He contends that Harper rose to power with an agenda so contrary to Canadian principles and values, that the only way he could pursue it was through a takeover of Canadian democracy. Mel Hurtig is the legendary Edmonton bookseller, publisher and creator of The Canadian Encyclopedia who became a political activist, then an author in 1991 with his huge bestseller The Betrayal of Canada. He is also the author of Pay the Rent or Feed the Kids, The Vanishing Country, Rushing to Armageddon and The Truth About Canada. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, and has received many honorary degrees and other honours. He lives in Vancouver.

While the target of this slim, quick-read book was defeated in the Canadian federal election of late 2015, the themes of its chapters are worthwhile benchmarks for the current government. The book has endnotes but unfortunately lacks an index.

The title of this book is a little melodramatic, but the content is not. Hurtig presents the evidence of Stephen Harper's actions against Canada's best interests in a clear, straightforward way, backing up his statements with reliable, mainstream sources. The information is divided into basic categories, and is presented in a simple, concise, readable way. Hurtig isn't going for shock value, he's trying to provide information we need in order to understand what is at stake. Any Canadian voter who wants to go to the polls fully informed should read this book.

What a good book, Mel certainly has the scoop on Harper . I have to say that this book is an eye opener for all people who blindly vote the party and not who is running it. I shall give great thought when I vote this year. Be wise, be very wise.

"The assault on science and scientists in Canada has been constant and unrelenting under this regime. The common theme amongst commentators is that Stephen Harper's government is determined to ignore or suppress inconvenient facts, particularly those relating to the impacts of climate change or tar sands oil production.
In his book, The War on Science, journalist Chris Turner writes, 'This is a government that does not simply ignore the best evidence but attempts to destroy the source of it...'"

"In 2012, Stephen Harper's government began a systematic campaign, through the Canada Revenue Agency and through funding cuts, to disrupt and control the work of Canadian charities - in particular those working in the environmental field."

"I have spent much of my career warning Canadians about the increasing threat that foreign corporate takeovers of our companies and resource sectors pose to our sovereignty and to the overall economic and social well-being of our country. [...] I never imagined that the greatest threat would come from the takeover of our democratic institutions by one politician determined to remake our nation according to his own values and priorities.
That one politician is, of course, Stephen Harper."

"The Canada we know and love will not survive another four years of Stephen Harper and his Conservative government. Everything we value is at stake."
