This book was slower moving than the books I usually read but by the second half there was momentum and the conclusion was good and fitting.

A delightfully easy read and a peek into rural America with a steady flow of good-natured humor. The cast of characters all bring their own significance to Perry's story of people sometimes showing their worst when they are trying to be at their best. It is not unpredictable at times but would still lend itself nicely to a screenplay.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Felt a real bond with Harley, the main character.

The image of Jesus on his calf changes everything for Harley. He tries to hide the calf but it gets out and marketing madness ensues. Perry creates interesting characters and I enjoyed the story. Slow read.

Michael Perry writes about a little rural community in Wisconsin like a combination of Garrison Keilor and Carl Hiassen. The sense of place and character is well-honed as you might expect of a radio commentator. The plot stretches reality beyond credibility, but there's enough wry humor for a pleasurable read.
