Nina Borg, a Red Cross nurse, wife, and mother of two, is trying to live a quiet life. The last thing her husband wants is for her to go running off on another dangerous mission to help illegal refugees. But when Nina's estranged friend Karin leaves Nina a key to a public locker in the Copenhagen train station and begs her to take care of its contents, Nina gets suckered into her most dangerous case yet. Because inside the suitcase is a three-year-old boy: naked and drugged, but alive. Nina's natural instinct is to rescue the boy, but she knows the situation is risky. Is the boy a victim of child trafficking? Can he be turned over to authorities, or will they only return him to whoever sold him? In an increasingly desperate trek across Denmark, Nina tries to figure out who the boy is, where he belongs, and who exactly is hunting him down. When Karin is discovered brutally murdered, Nina realizes that her life and the boy's are in jeopardy, too.

Nina Borg, a Red Cross nurse, is a bit of an adrenaline junkie, much to the chagrin of her longsuffering husband, who must hold down the fort and care for the kids whenever she runs off to her latest do-gooder adventure.

The adventure in this book, however, isn't one of Nina's choosing, but one thrust upon her when a desperate friend begs her to pick up a package in a locker. The "package" turns out to be a naked, drugged, three-year-old boy. The friend isn't available to shed any light on the situation, and Nina quickly learns that someone dangerous expected the suitcase to still be in the locker when he came to collect it.

Nina doesn't dare go to the police, and the boy, when he awakes, is of no help because he speaks a language Nina can't identify. Relying on her wits alone, she must try to figure out who wanted the boy and why, while avoiding the danger that now threatens them both.

Meanwhile, the boy's mother, Sigita, only knows that her child has been taken. Without leads and with little help from the police, she, too, must race against time to find and rescue her son.

The story is told from several characters' viewpoints and, while this is somewhat disorienting at first, it also adds to the quality of the mystery. Each character is trying to piece together what he or she knows to get a complete picture. The reader experiences this same sensation as the story moves toward its dynamic conclusion.
