I respectfully disagree it was slow. It started running. Roman Empire fighting war against Mongol Empire? General wondered why Emperor wanted to expand to North America.
Novel reminded me of Kirk Mitchell & The Other time by Mack Renyolds with Dean Ing except former set in alternate modern time & latter a time travel to the past in Mexico.
Wildly original novel also reminded me of Cross Time Engineer by Leo Frankowski & Lest Darkness fall by L. Sprange De Camp. However, the protagonist bumbled along with making bricks, kiln, bronze, steel, wheel & wheelbarrow.
I went WTF on native American strategic technological surprise on Roman Legion
Had odd feeling Roman & Mongol Empire playing game of Risk.

Not bad but a slow read. Mind switches from past to present as names, places challenge actual history. If nothing else it will keep you guessing.

Personally, I love these "alternate history" novels, the "what if" fantasy. And this one is original if nothing else...a Roman soldier in Cahokia in a world where the Roman Empire is still going strong in the days just before real history saw Europeans begin their invasion of the American continent. Notice I didn't say "discovery"? Aren't I politically correct? Anyhow, all I will say is that this novel makes me really want to see the next installment in the series.
