Mags was once an enslaved orphan living a harsh life in the mines, until the King's Own Herald discovered his talent and trained him as a spy. Now a Herald in his own right, at the newly established Heralds' Collegium, Mags has found a supportive family, including his Companion Dallen. Although normally a Herald in his first year of Whites would be sent off on circuit, Mags is needed close to home for his abilities as a spy and his powerful Mindspeech gift. There is a secret, treacherous plot within the royal court to destroy the Heralds.

I enjoy Mercedes Lackey and this was a good read, quick and light. But, really guys, it should have been called Young Adult.

I am a fan of the Valdemar books, but I gave this one a lower rating as I just don't care much for Amity and Mags. The story isn't one of the better plotted ones, it takes a lot from Romeo and Juliet and is very similar to many of the previous Valdemar books. An ok read but not great.

It is a good book. Strange how it is now a new series when it picks up seconds after Bastion ends but whatever. I really like the development of Amily and the villain - although their are parts when you wonder if she hasn't copied from the story of "Romeo and Juliet" a little too much.
