Two of the best members of the long-term staff of the 4077th arrive in the first and second episodes. Most of the viewers at the time were fond of Trapper, so it was jarring, then, to realize he'd not be back. But the insertion of BJ Hunnicutt into the cast is done so beautifully that you realize immediately he and Hawkeye were made for each other even more than were Trapper and Hawkeye. The change is seamless. The script lets viewers fall in love with BJ and never want to let him go.
And Colonel Potter! The change isn't handled quite as well as with BJ, but still, Potter is a relief after the silliness and drunkenness of Henry Blake. You know right away Potter's trustworthy; soon you learn he's likeable, too. For me, he was loveable, and still is, over 35 years later.
I'd give season 4 five stars but for the sometimes stark examples of sexism in the script. It's good to know that that will steadily improve as time goes on.
Now if only Major Burns can soon depart for good!

Last two episodes are fantastic anti-war commentary.

A season of change, enter BJ and Col. Potter! (you never see Trapper go, Hawkeye finds out upon return to the camp he just missed him!). And the great episodes just keep on coming!
