You have to wonder what the producers of "Newhart" , a popular 1980's sitcom, were thinking. At first, for Season 1, I mean. Why did they cast the important secondary characters needed to counter Bob Newhart's subtle humor with actors and actresses who had little talent for TV comedy? In Season 1 this problem was evident in spades. In Season 2 -- this DVD set -- the producers made a good choice by dumping the actress who played the maid Leslie, and replacing her with a new maid, Stefanie (played by Julia Duffy). Ms. Duffy indeed has comedy talent. Unfortunately, the problem of the Kirk character (played by Steven Kampmann) remains. The viewer will just have to live with him for Season 2. No worries, he gets dumped at the beginning of Season 3. So in Season 2 the series casting problems haven't been completely worked out, and the cast hasn't entirely gelled; but it's apparent there is comedy promise ahead. My favorite episode from this set is "Book Beat" -- the episode that forecasts the casting improvement which takes place in Season 3. In spite of the casting problems remaining, because of Bob Newhart's talent, Season 2 is still very funny and well worth watching. Recommended.
