"Flora Dane is a victim. Seven years ago, carefree college student Flora was kidnapped while on spring break. For 472 days, Flora learned just how much one person can endure. Flora Dane is a survivor. Miraculously alive after her ordeal, Flora has spent the past five years reacquainting herself with the rhythms of normal life, working with her FBI victim advocate, Samuel Keynes. She has a mother who's never stopped loving her, a brother who is scared of the person she's become, and a bedroom wall covered with photos of other girls who've never made it home. Flora Dane is reckless... or is she? When Boston detective D. D. Warren is called to the scene of a crime--a dead man and the bound, naked woman who killed him--she learns that Flora has tangled with three other suspects since her return to society. Is Flora a victim or a vigilante? And with her firsthand knowledge of criminal behavior, could she hold the key to rescuing a missing college student whose abduction has rocked Boston? When Flora herself disappears, D.D. realizes a far more sinister predator is out there. One who's determined that this time, Flora Dane will never escape. And now it is all up to D. D. Warren to find her."--

Deeply disturbing. Inspired by the author learning about the need for victims' advocates, this book tells the story of a survivor of an utterly horrendous kidnapping who is kidnapped again five years later. The second kidnapping is the mystery the detective is trying to solve; the first kidnapping was resolved from a law enforcement perspective - but certainly not from an effect-on-the-survivor perspective. You get enough detail to understand how horrible the crimes are - but the worst is left to the reader's imagination.

This book has all the twists and turns and connections I'm coming to expect from Ms. Gardner. Unlike some other authors, they feel earned. She leaves enough crumbs that they make sense when they happen but keeps enough in reserve that you don't always see them coming. She is quickly becoming one of my favourite mystery authors.

All that said, if you are triggered by violence against women, this book is not for you.

Read this book in one day - it really kept me guessing until the end! Would love recommendations on which other Detective D. D Warren books are of this calibre.

I like the author books but usually don't give more than 2.5 stars but this book was basically a 4 star. Was a page turner and the last 10-15 chapters you just wanted to know. I usually can pin point the culprit but this time you wondered if Flora could be lost in the head or crazy like her kidnapers or what. Like suspense then read the book.

This book grabbed me from page one right up to the end. Flora has been kidnapped and held for 472 days before she was rescued. She tells her story throughout the book. But while she is telling her story, she is trying to find another girl who was kidnapped. I don't want to give anything away, but this is a must read. I couldn't put it down.

This book was great. D.D.
Warren was a difficult character to like initially - considering Flora a murderer rather than a heroine. The plot was excellent - drawing the reader into the horrors of Flora's captivity and her present need to rescue victims of similar crimes. A must-read - yet another pulse-pounding novel by Gardner

The story held my attention from beginning to end with its twisting plotline and a character struggling to survive and adapt to her circumstances. I enjoy Gardner's style of writing whether to quicken pace or increase emotional tension. Recommend the book to readers who love psychological thrillers.
