ITS THE NIGHT BEFORE HOGSWATCH.nbsp;nbsp;AND IT'S TOO QUIET.

Where is the big jolly fat man?nbsp;nbsp; Why is Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say Ho Ho Ho?nbsp;nbsp; The darkest night of the year is getting a lot darker...

Susan the gothic governess has got to sort it out by morning, otherwise there won't be a morning.nbsp;nbsp;Ever again...

The 20th Discworld novel is a festive feast of darkness and Death (but with jolly robins and tinsel too).

As they say:nbsp;nbsp; You'd better watch out...

Forces have gathered to stop the universe from illogically changing. Humans have been unwittingly shaping the universe, turning it on its heels, and commanding it to bend to their beliefs, doing things that should be impossible. Now, the observers of the universe are determined to end the one of the most powerful manifestations of this strange force. He’s an ancient being, surviving for so long in many forms. Someone who can travel great distances, in one night, operating outside of this universe to reward those who believe in him, and behave well. The Auditors of reality are plotting to kill the beloved Hogfather, and they're willing to break the rules, even hire a professional to get the job done.

Now it’s up to a slightly less jolly figure, Death, to fill his place for him. Children sit on his bony knee, telling him their Hogswatch wishlist. And they get it, no matter how extravagant or dangerous it is. A sword, or maybe, a pony. While Death, and the overly cheerful, pixie Albert deliver presents, and perform little Hogswatch miracles, is up to his granddaughter, the mostly human Susan Sto Helit, to save the Hogfather from the assassin sent after him. An assassin who is frowned upon by his colleagues, for being too brutal. There is such a thing as being too thorough, especially when it means indiscriminately killing anyone who is no longer useful. She is up against a maniacal, bloodthirsty, fully trained assassin.

Meanwhile, the wizards of the Unseen University are thoroughly confused by the strange creatures popping into existence. A mentioned name can bring a new myth into the world. The new gods are causing trouble for the senior wizards on Hogswatch eve, running around getting indigestion, and eating socks. They are determined to find out what is disrupting their meal, even if it means looking a little bit silly.

This is one of my favourite books. It is dark, funny, and with a great plot, following all the creative characters. I would recommend reading the previous books first, for a better understanding of the characters, and storyline. They are “Mort”, “Reaper Man”, and “Soul Music”. It's a great book for the holidays, with some people either watching the movie, or rereading the book every year.

This is my favorite discworld book. It's funny, yet can be taken seriously at the same time. I own most of them. They have moved with me twice. Once from the middle of the USA to the east coast, and then to the west coast. I have bought a handful since moving here. They are old friends, when I get bored I reread them.

Simply put: One of the best novels I've read. Without a doubt one of the best Discworld novels, but it's so much more than that. Read this book next Christmas season, whether you've read anything else by Terry Pratchett or not.
