This original musical film is a fictional love story set in the 1960's amid Beatles music, the turbulent years of anti-war protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, mind exploration and rock and roll. At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, the story moves from high schools and universities in Massachusetts, Princeton and Ohio, to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Detroit riots, the killing fields of Vietnam and the dockyards of Liverpool. A combination of live action and painted and three-dimensional animation, the film is paired with many Beatles songs that defined the time.

Plays more like a series of short music videos than an actual movie.
Music generally very good ( under direction of T Bone Burnett), lots
of visually interesting effects and choreography. Plot and characters
a muddled choppy mess especially in the second half as it veers
about awkwardly to set up the next musical number.

I'm a huge musical fan from way back Oliver Twist, West Side Story, Grease I and 2, as well as The Muppet Movie. Saw Rock of Ages with Tom Cruise and I figured Across the Universe is the English version of it and yes it was. Good cultural piece; It did not knock my booties off, tried too hard to make the songs fit into the plot making it drag. Didn't finish it and if I don't get back to it so be it.

Such an amazing movie, truly fantastic. Wonderful music.

I guess the point is to sell some Beatles music to young people. The storyline is not much, the acting is lame, and the tie-in to the music is tenuous at best. Didn't hate it, but can't think of anything nice to say.

What starts out looking like an amateur high school operetta gradually builds into an unexpectedly mature piece of cinema with strong performances throughout and a soundtrack that makes clever use of all those classic Beatles songs. The musical numbers may not always work but when they do they are bang on thanks in large part to some dazzling visuals and Taymor’s overall sense of artistic restraint. No, there are no amazing plot twists and you can guess how it will all end within the first 15 minutes but it’s the journey itself that is so appealing. For those who would accuse this film of being shallow and dull, may I remind you of that other musical based on the Beatles’ music, 1978’s vomit-inducing “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” featuring the Bee Gees. ‘Nuff said.

Integrating familiar songs works very well.
But the script is garbage.

I LOVED this film and I'm of an age where that makes perfect sense, but my 21 year old daughter loved it too and has watched it over and over. AND my 10 yr. old daughter loves it just as much! This film is for those of us who love music.

Julie Taymor:I love you! This is such an enjoyable tribute to the creativity of the Beatles with great cinematography and casting.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. Not too bad---good performance. I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.

Possibly the only movie I have watched 3 times. Fantastic! Of course, I'm of an age where the music, the events, the locations all resonate.

Max: And you know what really pisses me off is I swallowed all those cotton balls and they never even took a damn x-ray.
Hippy dude: You still have options man.
Max: Yeah, jail or Canada and they both suck. I mean I could never come home, so what is it, it's a choice of a 6x4 cell or an endless wasteland of frozen tundra.
Hippy dude: Montreal is cool.
Max: Man, they speak French.
Hippie Guitarist: So learn French. Learn French or die.

Max: I'm a cross-dressing homosexual pacifist with a spot on my lung.
