I've said it before and I'll say it again: Art that polarizes audiences tends to be art that is remembered and is looked back at years later as important and groundbreaking.

This isn't a film for everyone, obviously from most of the reviews here. Audiences looking for a casual & familiar style of storytelling will likely be put off by its deliberately slow pacing and pairing of animation with adult themes -- It's far more of a heady existential experience than fleeting entertainment.

The story isn't uplifting, and that is as refreshing as the visual style used. This is a story that gets into real life truths, and truth is sometimes ugly. The brilliance of this film is what we can take away from the existential ugliness in life at times -- This is a window that allows us to extrinsically experience the darkness of the soul, examine it, and come out of the experience with thoughts and ideas that we can take into our own lives.

You simply aren't given that opportunity with many movies these days, because studios don't want to present art that instigates questioning, critical, and intellectual thought; Most want to slap a feed bag on us and watch us drool for ninety minutes, as western society has been conditioned to do more and more since television became prominent. Faster cuts, shallow content, uninventive storytelling.

"Anomalisa" is an interesting film, and offers a welcome break from the insulting monotony of Hollywood.

For more interesting and thought-provoking adult animation, look for: "Grave of the Fireflies", "Plague Dogs", "When the Wind Blows", and "Watership Down", amongst others.

I see 9 other people are waiting for this piece of trash IMO & you are welcome to it. I tried the first 10 minutes without fast-forwarding, then when the man goes into the hotel bathroom to pee...just what I've always wanted to view from behind, a stream of urine flowing. Over the years it seems men film makers seem to be very fascinated with this bodily function and want everybody to to view how it's done. Oh, what joy. Fast forward multiple times until I simply gave up. I've tried to keep an open mind & venture into films I normally wouldn't view. How thankful I am I didn't have to pay for this.

Props to Tom Noonan for playing the part of "Everyone Else," but there wasn't much else to grasp onto.

It's a movie about a sad man whose life has grown mundane to the point where everything feels the same. And when something, or someone, different catches his eye, he has to have it, but then it slowly fades into the mundane. I'm not sure if this movie accurately covers Fregoli Delusion, or if we're suppose to feel empathy towards the main character, but his distance and cold attitude towards most of the people he interacted with did not give me reason to root for him.

The animation was phenomenal, though. The timing was amazing on particular scenes, and I can say that I enjoyed the movie if just for that aspect alone.

I agree it's kinda creepy and sorta strange, but if you like kinda artsy stop motion films this one is a decent watch. It's like a dramatic and serious Team America.

One of the worst "good" or "well-regarded" films I've seen. Some of the prior negative comments will give you a decent idea what to expect. I will add that the main character probably believes that he really grew, and had good intentions, and found some hidden beauty that everyone else is missing ... but he's basically wrong.

It can be a bit ok if you are in the mood for a really downer movie about a shitty guy that really struggles with his life. it is filled with alot of awkward moments and feels really alien. Maybe that is part of the point, but the movie feels like it is trying to be too adult and dramatic for its own good. if you are looking for a movie that is trying to be arty and is really depressing and dont mind really adult stuff then this movie can be ok. But I say dont rush to see it at all.

I liked it quite a bit. Stayed with me for a long time. I can't argue with many of the comments, such as the painfulness of the dialogue and the shallowness of the main character. But I saw a lot of depth in the movie. More a kind of horror/sci-fi. Lots to think about and explore.

What is amazing about this soporific film is that it actually got funding to be animated, completed, produced, and distributed.

I've re-thought my original comments and added a star to my original rating. I didn't enjoy the film at all, probably because I was expecting something more enjoyable. But, it's not a film to enjoy--the dialogue is painfully superficial, and there is not a single likeable character. And that might be the point. The guy is a smooth-talking predator, and the woman is a willing victim. The peripheral characters are just voyeurs. I think, on reflection, that it's fairly well crafted. I wish, however, that the filmmakers had switched the genders of the main characters, so it wouldn't feel so much like another story about how middle-aged men are predators and young women are victims. Still, the fact that the film is still fresh in my mind a week after watching it says something about the film being worth watching. Just don't watch it for enjoyment.

Absolutely hated this film - pointless - could not care about the egocentric male character - somehow profanity seems more objectionable coming from the mouth of a "cartoon". Run do not walk away from this stop action movie mess.

Lisa: "It's an anomaly, right? I learned that word in your book. I like that word. Anomaly. I like the way it sounds and I like what it means. I feel like an anomaly. Before I used to know there was a word for it, it made me feel bad to be different. Now I kind of like it. Sometimes. I mean, not a lot, but sometimes. It makes me special, sort of. You know what I mean?"
Michael: "Anomalisa."
