To outsiders, Appleville, New Hampshire, is a storybook small town complete with a little white church and a gazebo on the village green. To Gincy Gannon Luongo, it was a place to escape from, as quickly and as permanently as she could. But at her brother Tommy's urging, Gincy is coming back to visit their recently widowed mother in the weeks leading up to Christmas - and she's bringing her teenage daughter, Tamsin, with her.

The theme of this book took me by surprise, as I haven't seen it used often, especially in a Christmas story. It was delightfully well done and I enjoyed the discovery. A woman matures and loses some of her conceitedness and rediscovers the value of her family, even though the other members seem to not be as successful or as intelligent as she is. She learns to see the other family members through others' eyes instead of through her own experience and strengthens bonds and grows as a person.
