Ugh, I just could not get through such slow dialog and even skipped through; but it still didn't get any better. Chose not to skip to any action parts, it was that bad. Didn't even watch it.

Directed by Susanna White in 2016 adapted from John le Carré's novel of the same name, this British thriller depicts the money-laundering plan of the Russian mafia.
The script seems badly-written because the original story appears unbelievable.
Even a great director could NOT make a good movie out of a bad script.

Another John le Carré thriller is brought to the screen with all the usual gaps and stretches, but director Susanna White keeps things brisk and exciting with a starry cast (Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgård, Naomie Harris, Damian Lewis) and highly photogenic locations shots which range from Morocco to London to the French alps. Unlike the usual glut of le Carré adaptations that rely on dark corners and oppressive spaces to ramp up the tension, cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle revels in his alpine panoramas, decadent desert oases, and gilded hotel lobbies while screenwriter Hossein Amini finds what suspense he can in a deadly stare or the offscreen howl of a dying dog. Very much a three-handed film with McGregor looking for validation (he feels as if he’s walking in his successful lawyer wife’s shadow), Skarsgård seeking redemption, and Harris letting down her barrister’s detachment to reveal a little more humanity.

An absorbing spy movie, an unlikely friendship, and timely commentary on corrupt government and institutions. The flamboyant head accountant for the Russian prison mob is desperate to get his family to safety and through sheer luck finds an idealistic U.K. poetry professor. who's on his own journey to save his marriage and regain his footing with his accomplished wife. His initial offer of help pulls him and his wife deeper and deeper into the spy world. The talented cast of Stellan Skarsgård, Naomie Harris, and Ewan McGregor moves the plot through international locations, duplicitous foreign banks, and violence. Damian Lewis plays the rule-breaking MI6 spy who has his own reasons for holding steady in the face of diplomatic weakness and leads to a slyly satisfying ending. Note: occasional Russian with English subtitles.

Cell phone service high in the French Alps? Okay, I know this is based on fiction, but come on... most of this story is highly suspect and on the verge of being or is just plain absurd. I suggest some good old Hitchcock intrigue instead.

Decent movie, not bad, but not spectacular either. Decent movie to pass the time.

Limp, unbelievable Russia-MI6 cloak & dagger yarn. A-list talent -- Stellan Skaarsgard, Ewan McGregor, Naomie Harris, Damian Lewis -- in service of a clunker script (an adaptation of a John le Carre novel of the same name). The film does look good though, and if you just want to kill two hours, it'll do the trick.

Very good spy thriller; I enjoyed watching Ewan McGregor in his role as the mild-mannered university professor caught up with the Russian mob and MI5.

A little unrealistic, however still a great film to watch.

You know what the Vory is, Professor?
-No.
It's like mafia but with honour.

Money has no smell as long as there's enough of it. Who cares what the Russians do as long as they
spend their cash here?
-There's really no need to be quite so emotional.
You're right, Mr Secretary. We've all seen too much of the world. Not wanking around? And all the dirty money that's sloshing around, the profits of heartache and pain, we've seen that, too. Heroin in Afghanistan, billions. Arms in the Sudan, billions. Female trafficking, billions. An eighth of the world's fxcking economy black as black. We all know that. Blood money. That's all it is. It can be in a box under a drug lord's bed or in a city bank next to the vintage port. It doesn't change colour. It's still blood money.
