When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pund, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful. So successful that Susan must continue to put up with his troubling behavior if she wants to keep her job. Conway's latest tale has Atticus Pund investigating a murder at Pye Hall, a local manor house. Yes, there are dead bodies and a host of intriguing suspects, but the more Susan reads, the more she's convinced that there is another story hidden in the pages of the manuscript: one of real-life jealousy, greed, ruthless ambition, and murder.

OMG. I loved this so much. I could not put it down. I absolutely loved the story within the story. And there were so many suspects, red herrings, and twists! If you are a fan of Agatha Christie mysteries (especially her Poirot books), you should read this. Definitely one of my favourite reads of 2017.

Really enjoyable, well written, but waaaay too long. I had a terrible time remembering who was who and even thought about doing a chart! But clever (especially enjoyable for puzzle and allusion lovers) and a good read.

This clever mystery-within-a-mystery, a classic Agatha Christie-style whodunit, is one of the most enjoyable murder mysteries I've come across.

I'm an occasional mystery murder reader. Horowitz wrote parallel, intertwined dual murder plots with characters galore. I became overloaded with the "who dunnit" but soon got back on the wagon in order to find out the final truth to all that contributed to the plot(s). The author of the murder story even penned clever names to the characters. There was deft and skill in the writing style regardless of the tale itself.

A fan of Alex Rider, GateKeepers and Diamond Brother series. But this one was not my style.

If I hadn't invested so much time when A. Horowitz got cute, I would have put this book down right then. Even though I finished it, I cannot say I enjoyed it. Horowitz is off my reading list. There are plenty of good mysteries out there.

Mixed feelings about this one. I had very high expectations based on the buzz and reviews, so maybe I built it up too much in my mind. The mysteries were clever, as was the concept of the book, but it dragged a bit, and I wasn't a huge fan of the characters in both the real world and the manuscript. Fun for whodunit fans, but not my favorite.

Fans of classic whodunits ala Agatha Christie will want to check this title out. A "classic" style mystery set inside a larger present-day mystery, with lots of nods to the books that inspired it. An homage. Great on audio!

In a word, fantastic. I love the structure of the dual narratives, and the way they ultimately intersect. I do have to say that I was slightly more interested in the solution to the Atticus Pund mystery itself rather than the overarching mystery surrounding Magpie Murders, but overall, I was quite pleased with this homage to Agatha Christie et al. I wish the Atticus Pund books were a real series! Great fun for cozy fans, and cleverly done. Highly recommended.

I liked: the two-for-one, story-within-a-story pair of mysteries, and how they were interwoven. I didn't like: reading most of the first mystery, then having to wait all the way through the second mystery to find out how the first one ends. Obviously I'm a bit conflicted here. Still worth the read though, especially if you like Agatha Christie!
