"Ronni Sunshine left London for Hollywood to become a beautiful, charismatic star of the silver screen. But at home, she was a narcissistic, disinterested mother who alienated her three daughters. As soon as possible, tomboy Nell fled her mother's overbearing presence to work on a farm and find her own way in the world as a single mother. The target of her mother's criticism, Meredith never felt good enough, thin enough, pretty enough. Her life took her to London--and into the arms of a man whom she may not even love. And Lizzy, the youngest, more like Ronni than any of them, seemed to have it easy, using her drive and ambition to build a culinary career to rival her mother's fame, while her marriage crumbled around her. But now the Sunshine sisters are together again, called home by Ronni, who has learned that she has a serious disease and needs her daughters to fulfill her final wishes. And though Nell, Meredith, and Lizzy have never been close, their mother's illness draws them together to confront the old jealousies and secret fears that have threatened to tear these sisters apart. As they face the loss of their mother, they will discover if blood might be thicker than water after all..."--

There is a definite pattern to Jane Green's characters: deadbeat husbands, depression, bad parenting, lost dreams, addiction and adultery. In this novel, it works very well. Ronni is a B starlet for most of her life and bears three girls with a husband she casually discards. She drains everyone's energy, so much so that her daughters escape her as soon as they can. When she is diagnosed with ALS, the mom gathers the (now adult) three sisters for her final days to say goodbye and to make amends. Most of the book is narrated through poignant, individual flashbacks by Nell, Meredith and Lizzy being forced to grow up with a mean and unbalanced woman. But hey, who grows up with perfect anything? I truly loved the ending.

3 Sisters - each uniquely different, brought together because of a family crisis. Enjoyable read.

This was an amazing book. The characters all had their own strengths, and as often is the case with siblings, all completely different talents and personalities. First time reading Jane Green and I liked her writing style. It was clear and not filled with pages of angst and indecisions.

What an enjoyable book! A story of a mother/daughters/sisters and the complicated relationships that exist between them. I especially enjoyed the arc of Nell's story. I had a feeling about where it was headed and I appreciated the grace with which it unfolded. This is a great summer read as Jane Green always is.
