"'There are eight million stories in the Naked City, ' as the narrator immortally states at the close of this breathtakingly vivid film-and this is one of them. Master noir craftsman Jules Dassin and newspaperman-cum-producer Mark Hellinger's dazzling police procedural was shot entirely on location in New York City, as influenced by Italian neorealism as American crime fiction. A double Academy Award-winner, The Naked City remains a benchmark for naturalism in noir, living and breathing in the promises and perils of the Big Apple, from its lowest depths to its highest skyscrapers."--Container.

Engrossing. Well-written. Good plot twists. Great characters. Excellent location shots.

Inspired by the photo-journalism of the aptly nicknamed Weegee (`Guy musta used a weegee (Ouija) board!`), this movie is based on an actual crime (in fact, the details are so undiluted, it`s a wonder the studio got it pass the censors and the people actually involved.) This was not meant to portray a Hannibal the Cannibal Lecter/Freddy Kruger crime. This was meant to demonstrate what`s happening while the rest of us go naively on with our 9-to-5 world, thinking everything is just peachy. It demonstrates why many a homicide detective and beat cop has said `If people really knew what was going on, they`ld go inside, lock their doors and windows, and never come out.`

"The Naked City" was produce din 1947 and released in 1948. Terrific film. Shot on various locations in NYC. Stars Irish actor Barry Fitzgerald but there are a bevy of small roles with actors who will go on to make the American television and film what it became. Look for actor Paul Ford from Sgt Bilco. There is a very young and balding David Opatoshu. Arthur O'Connell was loved by everyone. (O'Connell suffered from shell shock and could not speak clearly so he practiced speaking to his dog until he was good enough for the screen. How about that!). Howard Duff went on to marry Ida Lupino (it didn't last). Directed by Jules Dassin and produced by Mark Hellenger (who also gives a marvelous narration throughout the film). This is NYC but you can see horses pulling wagons without no one batting an eye. Try that today.

Yes. Time (and decades of TV Cop shows) has somewhat dulled the brilliant cutting-edge uniqueness of this once trend-setting Crime-Drama.

Released in 1948 - The Naked City is presented in a semi-documentary format. Its story spans a 6 day investigation into the death, by drowning, of an attractive young fashion model named Jean Dexter.

With there being no apparent signs of a struggle, Miss Dexter's death is at first taken to be a mere suicide since she was found drowned in her own bathtub. But after careful, step-by-step, investigation by Detective Dan Muldoon, it is soon revealed that this is clearly a case of murder of the most foul.

Suspicion falls heavily on various shifty characters who all prove to have some sort of connection with a string of recent apartment burglaries.

The Naked City's superb climax relentlessly builds to a heart-pounding, adrenaline-charged manhunt through the crowded streets and alleyways of NYC.

Cinematographer, William Daniels, and, editor, Paul Weatherwax, both won Oscars for their excellent work on this first-rate film.

Enjoyable to watch on many levels. Acting styles--melodramatic in some instances.Actors that went on to become very succesful. New York city itself amazing

Revolutionary for its time, its the first Police Documentary style film and the first police buddy partner movie. Barry Fitzgerald is the entertainment. Story flows, due to direction of Jules Dassin. The story is solid, not spectacular, as the case is methodically solved by the NYC police, using systematic police investigation work. Precursor to a whole range of films & TV shows. Practically a blueprint for anything from Dragnet to NYPD Blue.

Groundbreaking and entertaining, this highly underrated film set the stage for countless (vapid) TV shows to come.

Might have been a trend-setter back in the day but it hasn't aged very well. On-location shooting helps but that's about it.

There are eight million stories in the naked city, and this is a pretty average one. The filmakers are so occupied with avoiding the usual tricks, they fail to come up with anything better. But the big, bad city is looking fine, all tarnish and silver in the sun. Suggestion: turn off the sound, and voice over your own story. Charlie Parker would work for music.
