Three years ago, Madison Culver disappeared when her family was choosing a Christmas tree in Oregon's Skookum National Forest. She would be eight-years-old now--if she has survived. Desperate to find their beloved daughter, certain someone took her, the Culvers turn to Naomi, a private investigator with an uncanny talent for locating the lost and missing. Known to the police and a select group of parents as "the Child Finder, " Naomi is their last hope. Naomi's methodical search takes her deep into the icy, mysterious forest in the Pacific Northwest, and into her own fragmented past. She understands children like Madison because once upon a time, she was a lost girl, too. As Naomi relentlessly pursues and slowly uncovers the truth behind Madison's disappearance, shards of a dark dream pierce the defenses that have protected her, reminding her of a terrible loss she feels but cannot remember. If she finds Madison, will Naomi ultimately unlock the secrets of her own life?

Wow. One powerful, devastating book. Beautifully written. Tears shed after reading this one. Vivid characters, like you can see and smell the setting, feel compassion for all the characters, my heart aches. It'll take time to recover after a book like this for me.

I didn't really like the book. The characters were interesting, but I found the story to be lagging and I just couldn't get into it.

This was an amazing book. I couldn't put it down and stayed up way too late to finish it last night! It is a bit disturbing, but so we ll written and engrossing. I love how the author weaved the story together and added the magical aspects to it. Highly recommend.

All of the previous praise and more! A haunting book; impossible to really describe. Definitely worth the read.

Survivor stories are my favorite. Add an outdoorsy element to it and I like it even more. I'm pretty stingy with my 5 star ratings but this was so good I couldn't put it down. Started it at breakfast and finished it by bed time. The horror of Madison being abducted and what she endures is counteracted by her hope, strength and will to survive. Naomi is a shining light with a gift for finding abducted children. I just loved her character. A little bit fragile herself from her own haunted past, but also strong and determined to help these lost children. I did not want this book to end. I hope there is a sequel following Naomi and Jerome as they look into Naomi's past.

There is both beauty and evil in the world and Denfeld brings them together in this novel. This will not be for everyone - the subject matter is disturbing - but the lyrical writing, honest observations of the best and worst of human nature and the glimmer of light and hope keeps you reading.

A cannot put it downer. Every parent's worst nightmare and a survivor's mission to find the lost.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as her previous novel, [book:The Enchanted|18090147], but it was still a well-written tale. I would describe this as more of a literary mystery/thriller, but it's not a nail-biter or fast-paced. There is a mystery in there, but it's just as much about learning about the main character, Naomi, the "Child Finder" and her mysterious past. Despite it not being fast-paced, it's still a quick read since it's only about 250 pages.
